corpus christi catholic church
celebration, FLorida
With simple Romanesque style and Latin Cross floor plan, the new home for the Parish of Corpus Christi, in Celebration, Florida, fits harmoniously within the historically-based architecture of this traditionally planned town. Prominently located along Celebration Ave., the building's main entrance plaza and garden welcome pedestrians, while its tall bell tower gestures to the town. The 18,000 sf plan provides seating for 827, and provides a visual connection between the nave and chapel, with both elementsfocused on the tabernacle. It's simple massing is shaped by the narthex, nave, transepts and adoration chapel. The Church's character is that of a tropical sanctuary, with colonnaded loggias and heavy wooden doors, deeply recessed within thick masonry walls. Light steams into the church through two rows of transom rose windows. With the future addition of a Faith Formation Center, Youth Center and Pastoral Offices, the church campus will enclose two colonnaded courtyards, one for gathering and one for contemplation.
